DDN Author guidelines 2010 (version 12/2009)

DIGITAL_DENTAL.NEWS is a special interest magazine on the topic of digital dental technologies, which is exclusively devoted to the subject matter of digitalisation of the possible and relevant fields of work in the dental surgery and dental laboratory. As an interdisciplinary special interest magazine, DIGITAL_DENTAL.NEWS refers to both ambitious dentists and dental technicians who continuously want to improve their skills.
All submitted articles should account for these aspects in terms of content and design.
The author guidelines can also be downloaded in PDF format.

Structure and form

Articles should confirm to the following structure:
Title
Summary (length: min. 1,000 characters incl. blank characters)
Introduction
Text
Correspondence address
Bibliography (author, title, publisher with place and date of publication, ISBN / ISSN)
Photo and short vita of the author (career and current job)

The manuscript should be logically structured and provided with subheadings (unnumbered). Digitally produced images and illustrations should not be included in the text. Captions for the images belonging to the article should be available. In addition, an exact assignment of the images is requested.

Manuscript

The text should be sent printed on sheets in DIN A4 size and additionally be delivered on CD-ROM/DVD or via email.
All word processing programmes WORD in the versions for DOS and WINDOWS are accepted. In case of the usage of different programmes, the text should be converted into the WORD for WINDOWS format or saved in the ASCII or RTF format. PowerPoint presentations will not be accepted.

The text should be written as continuous text (endless and without automatic hyphenation) and should contain as little formatting as possible. A "hard return" (fixed line break) should only be used at the end of a paragraph. Generally, the text should be left-aligned and there should be a sufficient margin on the right. The following formatting should be absolutely avoided:
  • centre justification
  • special paragraph formatting (e. g. indentions at the beginning of paragraphs)
  • hyphenation
  • special characters
The original article should be previously unpublished and should be submitted to the publisher as a printable manuscript. The length of the text must be agreed on with the editorial team of DIGITAL_DENTAL.NEWS in advance. Longer texts appear as a sequence, if necessary. If the article is published as a sequence, each part should be contentually self-contained.

Images

Articles should not contain more than 20 images. Images should by all means be of high quality. Ideally, these should be digital images (with captions) that are numbered and aligned with the presented text. The templates should be sharp, of high colour fidelity and rich in contrast. For images of machines, instruments, restorations and the like, the background should be consistent, plain-coloured and unstructured. For security reasons, copies of the submitted graphics material should be made in the run-up. The images can be delivered via email or on CD-ROM/DVD.

Digital photographs should have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi and be at least 10 cm wide. In case of sending the images via email, the file should not be bigger than 8 MB. Favoured formats are *.jpg, *.tiff or *.eps.

Generally, in the case of patient photographs, the author is responsible for the agreement of the patient - otherwise, the patient must be made unrecognisable by covering the eyes - and for observing copyright regulations.

Source references / Bibliography

Citations and images taken from external copyrighted texts or articles should be appropriately identified. If necessary, a reprint statement should be requested for longer abstracts or illustrations. If there is no such notice, the editorial team and the publisher will take this as the author's confirmation that his article is free of third-party rights.

For lack of space, the editorial team has decided not to publish bibliographies, but instead to place the remark "The bibliography is available from the editorial team".

Appraisal

All submitted articles will be appraised by the editorial team and/or the expert advisory committee of DIGITAL_DENTAL.NEWS. Publication cannot be assured in the run-up. Rejected manuscripts will be sent back. If the article was not especially requested for a specific issue, there is no claim for a publication in a certain issue of DIGITAL_DENTAL.NEWS. The editorial team reserves the right to stylistically change and to shorten articles. Before the printing, the author will receive a copy of the complete text layout for verification and will be able to add small corrections once within a 3-day period.
